Editorial Policy

How articles on this site are researched, reviewed, corrected, and kept current. This page exists because "trust us" is not a standard, and because a reader deciding whether to act on a number deserves to know how it got here.

What every article must have before it publishes

• A named human author with a real biography, linked from the byline. Every article,

without exception. Where the author has first-hand operating experience of the subject, the biography says so; where they do not, the article rests on the next bullet and says whose experience or which document it draws on.

• A publish date and a last-reviewed date. The second only appears when it differs

from the first, so it means something when you see it.

• At least one of: first-hand operating experience, an original data point, an original

photograph or screenshot, or a cited primary source.

• A cited primary source with the date it was read, for any claim about money or about

law. A municipal ordinance and a blog post summarising that ordinance are not the same evidence, and we mark which is which.

• A second read against the sources, for any article making those claims. Where a

second person is available they are named as reviewer on the byline; while RentalWe has a single editor, the author re-reads the piece against every cited source on a later day before it publishes, and the review date on the page is that day. As contributors join, the reviewer named will be a different person from the author.

These are enforced rather than encouraged: an article missing any of them cannot be published, and the site build rejects it if it somehow is.

On the use of writing tools

Drafting assistance is permitted. Publishing without a human editorial pass is not.

Every article is read, checked, and signed by a person who is accountable for it. We do not generate articles at scale, we do not template one article across many cities or products, and we do not publish anything none of us would be willing to defend.

Regulations, which go stale fastest

Short-term rental rules change faster than the advice about them. Any article touching registration, permits, occupancy caps, or zoning carries the date the rule was checked and a link to the authority that set it. If you are reading one of those more than six months after its review date, check the source before acting.

Reviews and recommendations

We do not accept payment for a review or for a place in a comparison. Where we earn a commission on a link, that is disclosed above the link.

A review says when the product was used and for how long. If we have not used something, we say that instead of implying we have.

Corrections

Errors are fixed and marked, not fixed quietly.

• A factual error is corrected as soon as we know, with a note on the article saying what

changed and when.

• A change that alters the article's conclusion is noted at the top.
• A typographical fix is made without a note.

Keeping articles current

Articles that carry money or law claims are reviewed at least annually, and the last-reviewed date moves only when someone has genuinely re-read the sources. We would rather show an honest old date than a dishonest fresh one.
